Sirius and XM: Satellite Radio in America

Friday, April 9th, 2010

There are two major companies that offer satellite radio in America: Sirius and XM. XM was the first company that offered satellite radio. It has two satellites named Rock and Roll and it has its studios in Washington D.C. Sirius Radio has three satellites and ghd straighteners cheap has its studios in New York As the XM was first, it has 3,2 hundred thousand, but Sirius brings competition with 1,1 hundred thousand subscribers in the present time.Satellite radio is by far the best radio ever, making the AM/FM radios look old and dying even. This new era of radio has a lot of advantages that will please you at the maximum. As the income comes from the subscribers not from advertisements, there are no commercials, no one is saying what to buy, no one is promoting their channel and no one is interrupting you from listening to what you want, where you want. There a lot of choices in want to listen to as both XM and Sirius have a big programming variety that includes music channels of world music(pop, rock, classical, rap, hip-hop, opera, country, western, jazz, dance, blues, Latin), weather, news, traffic, sports and entertainment channels. Local weather and traffic channels are available only for major cities in the U.S.A. provided by the two companies and every five minutes you can hear updates. The best thing in all channels is that there are uncensored. So, you can listen to uncensored stand-up comedy and hip-hop channels, at least for now. The satellite radio has a very good sound quality, no static and no interference, a quality that may be compared with the one of a CD. The radio is based on a go/no-go system based on the strength of the ghd hair straighteners signal. So, weak signal may cause dropouts. You can easily get information about songs and artists right on you satellite radio receiver that can also help you select channels and categories. This makes it easier for you to choose the exact channel or song you want to hear. So, whenever you are wondering what song or channel you are listening to just read the information that the receiver shows. Now you can get satellite radio wherever you like, eventough at first it was design only for car use. With the right equipment you can easily have radio, but it depends on you whether you subscribe at XM or Sirius. Unfortunately, you can’t use a satellite radio turner for both XM and Sirius. There are three types of turners depending on where you want to listen to satellite radio. The Plug-and-play turner can be used out-door wherever you like as long as you have a portable boombox that can receive the signal. There are turners especially made for using them in cars and the home satellite radio turners for using them at home. Both companies want now to offer ghd iv style black a video service. This is planned to happen in the second half of the year 2006 and will include at first two video programs designed for children. Satellite radios’ prices start at ghds straighteners about $75.A subscription costs 12.95 per month wherever you want to subscribe as both XM and Sirius radio charges the same. There a couple of discounts like you can get satellite radio for a year at $9.95/month or Sirius is offering a subscription for a lifetime at $500. Indians: LaPorta stays calm despite being thrust into spotlight

Friday, April 9th, 2010

AKRON — All-Stars Grady Sizemore and Cliff Lee wouldn’t be on ghd iv style black the roster if the Indians hadn’t traded away ace Bartolo Colon. Travis Hafner and Franklin Gutierrez landed in Cleveland as parts of offseason trades. Even starting pitcher Jake Westbrook was one of the throw-in players when Cleveland shipped David Justice to the New York Yankees. Double-A prospect Matt LaPorta certainly has produced the kind of numbers that could have him joining the list of those acquired in trades who then developed into some of the top players in the big league clubhouse. LaPorta, 23, was the cornerstone of the trade that sent CC Sabathia to Milwaukee on Monday. Cleveland also picked up minor league pitchers Zach Jackson and Rob Bryson and a player to be named later, assumed to be either Class A third baseman Taylor Green or Double-A center fielder Michael Brantley — both considered top prospects in the Brewers farm system. “You just have to go out there and do your job, and you can’t worry about the expectations that people put on you,” LaPorta said during a Tuesday news conference at Akron’s Canal Park, home of the Tribe’s Double-A affiliate. “You have to go out there and stay within yourself and play hard every day.” The statement shows how unaffected LaPorta — a 6-foot-2, 210-pounder — is by the spotlight that has been shined in his direction, although he did admit, “it was neat to be part of such a big thing that’s going on right now in baseball.” While Cleveland is hoping for the power numbers it saw from former stars Albert Belle, Manny Ramirez and Jim Thome, the Indians know they already have a standup guy in LaPorta, who is a devout Christian and enjoys working with charities and children. “I feel that little kids look up to guys wearing these uniforms,” LaPorta said. “It doesn’t matter if you’re in Double-A, Triple-A or the big leagues. If you can mold one mind out of 100, that’s better than nothing. “That’s really all I care about — trying to help out as many people as I can along the way, because I know I wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t for all the help people gave to me.” LaPorta was a standout high school player in Port Charlotte, Fla., then was named the Southeastern Conference player of the year twice while at the University of Florida. He showed his sense of humor when asked if it would be tough for a former Gator to woo fans in Ohio. “You mean after we beat Ohio State all those times?” LaPorta said with a laugh. LaPorta was drafted as a catcher in the 14th round of the 2003 draft by the Chicago Cubs, and as a first baseman in the 14th round of the 2006 draft by Boston, but stayed at Florida. He was then selected by Milwaukee with the seventh overall pick in last year’s draft and has been one of the top hitters in minor league baseball. LaPorta, who is right-handed, has been especially impressive against right-handed pitchers, batting .301 with 15 home runs this season. He’s also solid in the clutch, batting .313 with runners on base and .307 with runners in scoring position. LaPorta will be the first to explain that the numbers are the result of ghd straighteners hard work. In college, the police arrived at the baseball stadium late one night because someone heard loud noises. They found LaPorta alone working on his swing, and he’s spent countless hours poring over video of major league sluggers’ swings. “I’m a perfectionist, and a student of the game,” said LaPorta, listing Sammy Sosa, Albert Pujols and Ramirez as a few of his favorite hitters to watch. “There’s so many great players in the game … why not watch them? Why not try and figure out what they’re doing to become great? “I just try to do whatever I can to make myself the best that I can be.” LaPorta and Aeros ghd iv style pure teammate Wes Hodges will be part of the U.S. team in the Futures Game at Yankee Stadium on Sunday as part of the All-Star activities. Both players are also on the list of 60 players being considered for the U.S. Olympic team that will compete in Beijing. “I’d love to play on the U.S. team, the Olympic team, and represent this great country — it’d be such an honor,” said LaPorta, who played for the national team in 2005. “But a lot of it has to do with the organization and what they feel, so we’ll see what happens.” While the people in Milwaukee got to see Sabathia pitch for the first time Tuesday night with the Brewers, the cheap ghd straighteners Akron Aeros and Indians fans will have to wait until tonight after Tuesday’s game with the Bowie Baysox — which LaPorta was scheduled to start in left field and bat third in the lineup — was rained out. It will be made up as part of a doubleheader today starting at 6 p.m. Contact Shaun Bennett at 329-7137 or sbennett@chroniclet.com.

USAToday.com’s redesign: Thumbs-up or thumbs-down?

Friday, April 9th, 2010

USA Today has the subject of a lot of blogger commentary over the weekend due to its Web site, which now features community features herve leger cheap such as profiles and blog spaces for registered users, the ability for people to vote stories up (but not down), and open comment threads on every story. The paper’s site also says it will herve leger shop be recruiting readers to send in their news: “We’re going to be asking you to send us your photos…(so) you can be part of covering the story.”In addition, USAToday.com has been redesigned and modernized. It’s a functional if not very attractive Web 2.0 design, with an Ajax story carousel and a list of the most popular and most commented-on stories. It’s easily understandable by people accustomed to contemporary Web sites, although it bears little design resemblance to the paper with the same name. The blogosphere is mixed. TechCrunch says, “Bravo,” but Steve Rubel says the new site “doesn’t go far enough.” Stowe Boyd found the limitations of the social features, “ultimately annoying.”The people herve leger clothing who matter–its readers–are baffled. Initial feedback to the new site is negative. Following the trend of most publishing redesigns, however, the readers will probably forgive the paper eventually. And the article-based discussions are already taking off. It’s unclear, though, how the community features will actually improve the news content at the paper itself. We can get user commentary from thousands of online sources, but precious few sites pay people to research and write actual news stories. Say what you will about the USA Today reporting and writing style, it is a bona fide newspaper with actual journalists on the payroll. When I visit news sites like it, I want to read the work of those journalists, filtered by their editors, front and center. Learning from the community of readers is fine–as long as it doesn’t get in the way. I definitely don’t feel any pull to write a blog on USAToday.com.I like that the site now has some community features. But call me old-fashioned: I like it even more that I can still just read the site as an online newspaper. By the way, TechMeme has a great roundup of blog commentary on this topic. herve leger Rafe Needleman writes about start-ups, new technologies, and Web 2.0 products, as editor of CNET’s Webware. nd the threat of H1N1 looming,

Friday, April 9th, 2010

COLUMBIA, Mo. — With flu season in full swing and the threat of H1N1 looming, demand for vaccines is at an all-time high. Although those vaccines are expected to be effective, University of Missouri researchers have found further evidence that some over-the-counter drugs, such as aspirin and Tylenol, that inhibit certain enzymes could impact the effectiveness of vaccines.”If you’re taking aspirin regularly, which many people do for cardiovascular treatment, or acetaminophen (Tylenol) for pain and fever and get a flu shot, there is a good chance that you won’t have a good antibody response,” said Charles Brown, associate professor of veterinary pathobiology in the MU College of Veterinary Medicine. “These drugs block the enzyme COX-1, which works in tissues throughout the body. We have found that if you block COX-1, you might be decreasing the amount of antibodies your body is producing, and you need high amounts of antibodies to be protected.”COX enzymes play important roles in the regulation of the immune system. The role of these enzymes is not yet understood completely, and medications that inhibit them may have adverse side effects. Recent research has discovered that drugs that inhibit COX enzymes, such as COX-2, have an impact on the effectiveness of vaccines. Brown’s research indicates that inhibiting COX-1, which is present in tissues throughout the body, such as the brain or kidneys, could also impact vaccines’ effectiveness. These MU researchers also are studying the regulation of inflammation and how that leads to the development or prevention of disease. Many diseases, such as arthritis, cardiovascular disease and diabetes, are herve leger sale all chronic inflammatory diseases. Contrary to previous beliefs, inflammation is generally a good thing that helps protect individuals from infection. Many of the non-steroidal drugs that treat inflammatory conditions reduce antibody responses, which are necessary for treating infections.”So far, we’ve tested this on an animal model and have found that these non-steroidal drugs do inhibit vaccines, but the next step is to test it on humans,” Brown said. “If our results show that COX-1 inhibitors affect vaccines, the takeaway might be to not take drugs, such as aspirin, Tylenol and ibuprofen, for a couple weeks before and after you get a vaccine.”Brown’s research, “Cycloozygenase-1 Orchestrates Germinal Center Formation and Antibody Class-Switch via Regulation of IL-17,” has been published in The Journal of Immunology. Uma Shri won Best Actress award for ‘Gulabi Talkies’. Recovery from Data Disaster

Friday, April 9th, 2010

Whether you’re working on an important project uploading or moving data, if you loose data from your computer system it can be devastating on many levels. However coping with this loss may only be temporary because when it comes to basic hard drives, removable hard drives or RAID arrays recovery may be easier than you think, provided more data has not added to your drive. If you are considering using software to recover your lost data then determining whether the problem is an internal component fault or a logical error is vital. If the problem is an internal physical fault and the data is critical the safest and only option will be to shut down your system and contact a data recovery specialist, as any further internal movement, could cause permanent loss of your data. The importance of the information on the disk and time factor will always play a major part on the decision to use the services of a data recovery specialist or not. Some people will first attempt to retrieve their data by discount lacoste shoes running system scans or virus software, however when they find that the situation has not improved they lacoste shoes sale start to think about either using data recovery software or finding a data recovery expert. This do it yourself approach can sometimes be an expensive mistake, because there may only be one chance to recover the data and if done incorrectly, the data could be inadvertently lost forever. Software repair programs can help determine where and why errors are occurring or piece together bits of information found in the file system to recreate lost files. While you may not be able to retrieve all the lost information, you may be able to recover a large portion mens lacoste shoes of it. If you use software to recover your data using lacoste carnaby shoes the same drive to run the repair program may cause the system to crash. Software programs will require installing on a separate drive. The best way to prevent data loss in the first place, is to have a secure backup system. Backing up your data on a daily or weekly basis can bring you peace of mind if your computer system crashes or is damaged. If none of the data on your computer can be saved or very little is recovered, at least you will not have to restart a project from scratch again. If you need your computer hard drive repaired quickly, most recovery services offer a quick turnaround service but this will depend on the extent of the damage to your hard disk. You may have to pay extra for this service, but if you have for instance confidential banking or business information, on your computer that you need quickly, this may be your only option. For more information on data disaster recovery visit computrdice.com you will find more tips on selecting hard drive data recovery specialists and information on offsite backup and storage.

Peptide Ghrelin May Be Involved In Both Alcohol Dependence And Overeating

Friday, April 9th, 2010

Previous herve leger discount research had shown that ghrelin levels in blood plasma are altered in addictive behaviours such as alcohol dependence and compulsive overeating, said Jörgen Engel, professor of pharmacology at the Sahlgrenska Academy, University of Gothenburg. It may be that common mechanisms in the brain underlie different forms of addictive behaviours, including compulsive overeating, pathological gambling and drug dependence, he said. We hypothesized that the ghrelin system may be an important player in the brain-reward systems and, more specifically, wanted to investigate if the ghrelin system is involved in alcohol dependence in humans. Engel is also corresponding author for the study.Rainer Spanagel, director and chair of psychopharmacology at the Central Institute of Mental Health in Germany, called this study very important for uncovering similar neurobiological mechanisms that seem to underlie overeating and compulsive drug use. Ghrelin appears to interact with the mesolimbic dopaminergic reward system, which means it may be able to affect the action of drugs of abuse, including alcohol, he said. For this research, scientists recruited 417 Spanish individuals from the general population (n=279) as well as heavy drinkers (n=138) admitted to a hospital for treatment. The study sample – comprised of abstainers, moderate and heavy alcohol drinkers – was then examined for single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in the pro-ghrelin and growth hormone secretagogue receptors (GHS-R1A) gene.Findings showed that SNP rs2232165 of the GHS-R1A gene was associated with heavy alcohol consumption. SNP rs2948694 of the same gene as well as haplotypes of both the pro-ghrelin and the GHS-R1A genes were associated with an increased body mass in individuals consuming heavy amounts of alcohol. Not herve leger sale only are these specific variations in the genes producing ghrelin and its receptor more common in heavy alcohol-using individuals, said Engel, these variations also seem to have an influence on the body weight of these heavy drinking individuals, as we found an association with an increased body weight in these patients. In other words, if you are a carrier of these genetic variants in the ghrelin or ghrelin receptor gene, you are more susceptible to having multiple addictive behaviours such as alcohol dependence and overeating. This is one further important piece of evidence in humans that there is a link between the activity of the ghrelin hormone and the action of alcohol, noted Spanagel. Our findings may help to explain the comorbidity of different addictive behaviours such as alcohol addiction and compulsive overeating, said Engel, providing clues to the genetic basis for the development of these kind of disorders. Ghrelin and its receptor could thus be targets for the development of new drugs for alcohol herve leger shop dependence or a subtype of alcohol-dependent individuals with eating disorders such as compulsive overeating.Co-authors of the ACER paper, were: Sara Landgren and Elisabet Jerlhag of the Institute of Neuroscience and Physiology in cheap herve leger the Department of Pharmacology at Göteborg University; Henrik Zetterberg and Kaj Blennow of the Institute of Neuroscience and Physiology in the Department of Psychiatry and Neurochemistry at Göteborg University; Arturo Gonzalez-Quintela and Joaquin Campos of the Department of Internal Medicine at the Hospital Clinico Universitario of Santiago de Compostela, Spain; Ulrica Olofsson of the Regional Oncologic Centre of the West Sweden Health Care Region; and Staffan Nilsson of the Department of Mathematical Statistics at Chalmers University of Technology, Sweden. One impudent English girl; one unsolved murder

Friday, April 9th, 2010

The Sweetness at the Bottom of the Pie by Alan Bradley Reviewed by Peggy McMullen The Oregonian It’s not a severed horse head that shows up in bed but rather a dispatched jack snape left on the kitchen doorstep, a postage stamp affixed to “the long black needle of its bill,” that is the ominous missive in The Sweetness at the Bottom of the Pie. Colonel de Luce — “sucking air noisily up through his nose like a cart horse” — plucks up the stamp and disappears into his study, leaving the housekeeper to declutter the stoop, and his youngest daughter, clever Flavia, to solve the impending murder. Because, yes, before the next morning is fully dawned at the family’s rundown British manor, a body does turn up. Flavia, in the early morning hours, finds an expiring man among the cucumbers: The stranger “exhaled … a single word, slowly and a little sadly, directly into my face. ‘Vale’…” Alan Bradley’s Flavia is no cosseted 11-year-old of today, needing to be rushed off to trauma counseling. She’s a perspicacious child with boundless curiosity:”I wish I could say my heart was stricken,” Flavia says, “but it wasn’t. I wish I could say my instinct was to run away, but that would not be true. Instead, I watched in awe, savoring every detail. …” It’s that impudent, undaunted, sophisticated curiosity that launched the first charming mystery in a planned series by Bradley, all on the strength of a chapter submitted to the Debut Dagger competition in 2007. Bradley won a Dagger award and multi-book deal when one of the judges was captivated by Flavia’s character. Her charm continues to mesmerize, the book is now sold in 19 countries and, since its release in the mbt shoes sale U.S. this spring, has launched onto indie best-seller lists. buy mbt shoes Locally, it’s a staff favorite at Broadway Books and Powell’s, and has close to 200 folks signed up waiting for a copy from the Multnomah County Library. Part of the book’s charm is the setting of the English countryside and the family’s fading Georgian manor, Buckshaw. It’s the summer of 1950, and Flavia and her sisters — preening Ophelia, 17, and bookish Daphne, 13 — live quiet, singular, mostly unmonitored lives. Their mother, Harriet, was killed in a mountaineering accident when Flavia was an infant; their father spends most of his days behind closed doors, immersed in his world-class stamp collection. The three sisters have more of an uneasy truce than any chummy alliance, with many a revenge plotted between the two older sisters and Flavia. One Flavia designs for Ophelia grows from the observation “that a charge of lipstick is precisely the size of a .45 caliber slug” and Flavia’s love of chemistry. (The latter is abetted by the massive home chemistry lab of a now-deceased uncle that’s been bequeathed to her.) Flavia, who fears her father’s odd ways (and an overheard conversation the night before with the now-deceased) may land him in the mbt shoes sales pokey, takes her footloose self off to try to solve the murder. She pedals about the countryside on her “ancient BSA” Gladys, tracing the victim to his room at the Thirteen Drakes (and discretely giving his luggage a toss), then moving on to her father’s old boys school Greyminster, where Dad has been implicated in a suicide leap from a campus tower 30 years before. Her investigation turns up one lead after another — much to the chagrin of Inspector Hewitt — as Flavia puts the “lucky” in “plucky.” It’s a charming, fun romp of a mystery, all the better for knowing that this odd little English girl was created by a 70-year-old Canadian man who’d never set foot in Flavia’s homeland until he was there to accept the Dagger award for her story. He’s completed The Weed That Strings the Hangman’s Bag, the second book in the series about Flavia, dubbed The Buckshaw Chronicles. The new book involves the village church and a traveling puppet show, and is scheduled for release in 2010. Books mentioned in this post

Microsoft debuts Silverlight update

Friday, April 9th, 2010

Microsoft is launching a revamped test version of its Silverlight software that is designed to broaden the appeal of the company’s answer to Adobe Systems’ Flash.Chairman Bill Gates was set to announce Silverlight 2 beta 2 on Tuesday morning at Microsoft’s TechEd conference in Orlando, Fla. Gates was also slated to unveil a partnership with IBM to make it easier to build DB2 database applications using Microsoft’s tools, as well as updates to other Microsoft tools.Bill Gates speaking in Redmond, Wash. last month.(Credit: Ina Fried/CNET News.com)The new release of Silverlight, which will be available for download on Tuesday, includes support for Microsoft’s .Net Framework, the company’s programming model for building Windows applications, which will likely make it more appealing to established Windows programmers, said Jonathan Perera, general manager of Microsoft’s Application Platform Division.”If Silverlight 1.0 was about what people could do on their Web sites, Silverlight 2.0 is about what people can do on their interactive applications,” Perera said. The initial release of Silverlight, a browser plug-in for rich interactive applications such as audio-video playback and animation, has yet to diminish the popularity of Flash, though the revamped release could fare better thanks to the .Net support. Microsoft estimates that there are about 4 million .Net developers worldwide.Microsoft also debuted a technology preview of software code named Velocity that makes it easier to build Web applications that include an in-memory data cache, such as Web commerce applications.
