The beauty industry

August 19th, 2010

The one American industry unaffeted by the general depression of trade is the beauty industry. American women continue to spend on their faces and bodies as much as they spent before the coming of the slump–about three million pounds a week. These facts and figures are ‘official’, and can be accepted as being substantially true.

The modern cult of beauty is not exclusively a function of wealth. If it were, then the personal appearance industries would have been as hit by the trade depression as any other business. But, as we have seen, they have not suffered.Women are retrenching on other things than their faces.

Women, it is obvious, are freer than in the past. Freer not only to perform the generally unenviable social functions hithero reserved to the male, but also freer to exercise the more pleasing, feminine privilege of being attractive. The fortunes are made justly by face-cream manufacturers and beauty-specialists, by the sellers of rubber reducing-belts and massage machines, by the patentees of hair-lotions and the authors of books on the culture of the abdomen.

It is a success in so far as more women retain their youthful appearance to a greater age than in the past. The Portrait of the Artist’s Mother will come to be almost indisinguishable, at future picture shows, from the Portrai of the Artist’s Daughter. The success is part due to skin foods and injections of paraffin-wax, facial surgery, mud baths, and paint, and in part due to impoved health. So for some people, the campaign for more beauty is also a compaign for more health. Beauty that is merely the artificial shadow of these symptoms of heslth is intrinsically of poorer quality than the genuine article. Still, it is a sufficiently good imitation to be sometimes mistakable for the real thing. Every middle-in-come preson can afford the cosmetic apparatus and more knowledge of the way in which real herlth can be achieved is being universally aced upon. When that happy moment comes, will every woman be beautiful-as beautiful, at any rate, as the natural shape of her features? The answer is apparent: No,for real beauty is as much an affair of the inner as of the outer self.

Art In Home and Garden Inspires Peace and Contemplation

August 11th, 2010

This deep and intricate realm of American modern art can be most appreciated in the delicate things. Home and Garden is a place where that kind of traditional hand made art restores the splendor of the subtle and peaceful. Home is where the heart is. And through the art of weathervane our expressions of self and family become most attuned to the sky, wind and land that we call home. The weather vane inspires peace and contemplation wherever it stands. Mythical creatures, farm animals, creatures of the sea, sailboats, airplanes, national prides; creative works of an artistic imagination that follow the moving patterns of the wind, a wind that only sleeps at the calm of the storm. And in those moments the weather vane asks a question, where is the wind?

Petraeus faces daunting challenges

June 29th, 2010

KABUL, Afghanistan — A weak and troublesome Afghan partner. A war strategy increasingly questioned. Sniping between military and civilian officials. Military deaths at record levels. A deadline to begin withdrawing troops that may come too soon.

Gen. David Petraeus faces daunting challenges when he assumes command in Afghanistan following what by all accounts will be quick approval by the Senate.

Petraeus is no stranger to the role that awaits him. He was widely credited with turning around the Iraq war after he assumed command in January 2007 at a time when the country was spinning into chaos.

Afghanistan may well prove tougher. The country is poorer than Iraq, and the government is weaker. Fighting is scattered throughout much of a large country with formidable terrain rather than focused in Baghdad and a handful of major cities.

Indians: LaPorta stays calm despite being thrust into spotlight

April 9th, 2010

AKRON — All-Stars Grady Sizemore and Cliff Lee wouldn’t be on ghd iv style black the roster if the Indians hadn’t traded away ace Bartolo Colon. Travis Hafner and Franklin Gutierrez landed in Cleveland as parts of offseason trades. Even starting pitcher Jake Westbrook was one of the throw-in players when Cleveland shipped David Justice to the New York Yankees. Double-A prospect Matt LaPorta certainly has produced the kind of numbers that could have him joining the list of those acquired in trades who then developed into some of the top players in the big league clubhouse. LaPorta, 23, was the cornerstone of the trade that sent CC Sabathia to Milwaukee on Monday. Cleveland also picked up minor league pitchers Zach Jackson and Rob Bryson and a player to be named later, assumed to be either Class A third baseman Taylor Green or Double-A center fielder Michael Brantley — both considered top prospects in the Brewers farm system. “You just have to go out there and do your job, and you can’t worry about the expectations that people put on you,” LaPorta said during a Tuesday news conference at Akron’s Canal Park, home of the Tribe’s Double-A affiliate. “You have to go out there and stay within yourself and play hard every day.” The statement shows how unaffected LaPorta — a 6-foot-2, 210-pounder — is by the spotlight that has been shined in his direction, although he did admit, “it was neat to be part of such a big thing that’s going on right now in baseball.” While Cleveland is hoping for the power numbers it saw from former stars Albert Belle, Manny Ramirez and Jim Thome, the Indians know they already have a standup guy in LaPorta, who is a devout Christian and enjoys working with charities and children. “I feel that little kids look up to guys wearing these uniforms,” LaPorta said. “It doesn’t matter if you’re in Double-A, Triple-A or the big leagues. If you can mold one mind out of 100, that’s better than nothing. “That’s really all I care about — trying to help out as many people as I can along the way, because I know I wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t for all the help people gave to me.” LaPorta was a standout high school player in Port Charlotte, Fla., then was named the Southeastern Conference player of the year twice while at the University of Florida. He showed his sense of humor when asked if it would be tough for a former Gator to woo fans in Ohio. “You mean after we beat Ohio State all those times?” LaPorta said with a laugh. LaPorta was drafted as a catcher in the 14th round of the 2003 draft by the Chicago Cubs, and as a first baseman in the 14th round of the 2006 draft by Boston, but stayed at Florida. He was then selected by Milwaukee with the seventh overall pick in last year’s draft and has been one of the top hitters in minor league baseball. LaPorta, who is right-handed, has been especially impressive against right-handed pitchers, batting .301 with 15 home runs this season. He’s also solid in the clutch, batting .313 with runners on base and .307 with runners in scoring position. LaPorta will be the first to explain that the numbers are the result of ghd straighteners hard work. In college, the police arrived at the baseball stadium late one night because someone heard loud noises. They found LaPorta alone working on his swing, and he’s spent countless hours poring over video of major league sluggers’ swings. “I’m a perfectionist, and a student of the game,” said LaPorta, listing Sammy Sosa, Albert Pujols and Ramirez as a few of his favorite hitters to watch. “There’s so many great players in the game … why not watch them? Why not try and figure out what they’re doing to become great? “I just try to do whatever I can to make myself the best that I can be.” LaPorta and Aeros ghd iv style pure teammate Wes Hodges will be part of the U.S. team in the Futures Game at Yankee Stadium on Sunday as part of the All-Star activities. Both players are also on the list of 60 players being considered for the U.S. Olympic team that will compete in Beijing. “I’d love to play on the U.S. team, the Olympic team, and represent this great country — it’d be such an honor,” said LaPorta, who played for the national team in 2005. “But a lot of it has to do with the organization and what they feel, so we’ll see what happens.” While the people in Milwaukee got to see Sabathia pitch for the first time Tuesday night with the Brewers, the cheap ghd straighteners Akron Aeros and Indians fans will have to wait until tonight after Tuesday’s game with the Bowie Baysox — which LaPorta was scheduled to start in left field and bat third in the lineup — was rained out. It will be made up as part of a doubleheader today starting at 6 p.m. Contact Shaun Bennett at 329-7137 or sbennett@chroniclet.com.

USAToday.com’s redesign: Thumbs-up or thumbs-down?

April 9th, 2010

USA Today has the subject of a lot of blogger commentary over the weekend due to its Web site, which now features community features herve leger cheap such as profiles and blog spaces for registered users, the ability for people to vote stories up (but not down), and open comment threads on every story. The paper’s site also says it will herve leger shop be recruiting readers to send in their news: “We’re going to be asking you to send us your photos…(so) you can be part of covering the story.”In addition, USAToday.com has been redesigned and modernized. It’s a functional if not very attractive Web 2.0 design, with an Ajax story carousel and a list of the most popular and most commented-on stories. It’s easily understandable by people accustomed to contemporary Web sites, although it bears little design resemblance to the paper with the same name. The blogosphere is mixed. TechCrunch says, “Bravo,” but Steve Rubel says the new site “doesn’t go far enough.” Stowe Boyd found the limitations of the social features, “ultimately annoying.”The people herve leger clothing who matter–its readers–are baffled. Initial feedback to the new site is negative. Following the trend of most publishing redesigns, however, the readers will probably forgive the paper eventually. And the article-based discussions are already taking off. It’s unclear, though, how the community features will actually improve the news content at the paper itself. We can get user commentary from thousands of online sources, but precious few sites pay people to research and write actual news stories. Say what you will about the USA Today reporting and writing style, it is a bona fide newspaper with actual journalists on the payroll. When I visit news sites like it, I want to read the work of those journalists, filtered by their editors, front and center. Learning from the community of readers is fine–as long as it doesn’t get in the way. I definitely don’t feel any pull to write a blog on USAToday.com.I like that the site now has some community features. But call me old-fashioned: I like it even more that I can still just read the site as an online newspaper. By the way, TechMeme has a great roundup of blog commentary on this topic. herve leger Rafe Needleman writes about start-ups, new technologies, and Web 2.0 products, as editor of CNET’s Webware.
